Introduction

Dalma is a most popular mix vegetable dal based traditional dish from Odisha, India, which is made on special occasions. This dalma recipe is made of using variety of vegetables along with dal moong, dal chana and masalas This traditional dish can be served with rice or chapati as you like according to your taste.

I am from Pakistan, but I usually like Indian vegetable-based food and other traditional dishes. Sometimes I try to cook at home and enjoy it with family members. Dalma is one of my favorite dish so i iam happy to share the Dalma recipe with you.while doing a several hours researched and found that there are different recipes of Dalma, some use coconut, some use onions, and some use neither. Therefore, it doesn’t matter what others use; you can use whatever you prefer according to your taste.

Ingredients for the Dalma Recipe:

Fresh coconut (grated)2 tablespoons
Turmeric powder1 teaspoon
Roasted cumin and red chili powder1 teaspoon
Garlic cloves6
Dry red chillies2
Mustard oil2 tablespoon
Panch Phoron (Bengali five-spice mix)1 teaspoon
SaltTo taste
Chopped coriander leavesFor garnishing

Preparation:

  1. wash the Toor Dal and soak it for about 30 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, combine the dal, turmeric powder, salt, and 3 cups of water. Cook until the dal is soft but not mushy.
  3. Add the diced vegetables to the cooker and simmer until they are cooked yet retain their shape.
  4. For the tempering, heat mustard oil in a pan. Add crushed garlic, dry red chilies, and Panch Phoron. Once they start spluttering, pour this over the cooked dal and vegetables.
  5. Add the roasted cumin and red chili powder, and give the Dalma a gentle stir.
  6. Garnish with fresh coconut and chopped coriander leaves.

Serving:

Dalma is traditionally served with rice or roti. It can also be enjoyed as a soup.
